Like the EU, Switzerland is imposing sanctions against the pro-Russian platform Voice of Europe. The portal is accused of systematic disinformation campaigns and manipulation to destabilize Ukraine and the EU as well as defending Russia's war of aggression.
The Voice of Europe portal based in Prague is also suspected of having paid money to European politicians, in particular members of the German right-wing party AfD. According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), which is responsible for sanctions, the portal is spreading false propaganda from the Kremlin in Moscow.
At the same time, Seco placed two Ukrainians associated with Voice of Europe on the sanctions list. They are said to support actions against the credibility and legitimacy of the Ukrainian government.
Among the two is Viktor Medvedchuk, who has been expatriated from Ukraine. He is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Medvedchuk controls media in Ukraine through his business partners and spreads pro-Russian propaganda via them and Voice of Europe.
With this decree, Switzerland is adopting sanctions adopted by the EU on May 27. The EU banned Voice of Europe and three Russian media from broadcasting. Shortly after the start of the Russian military attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the Federal Council decided to adopt the EU sanctions against the aggressor.
