Switzerland exceeded its voluntary gas savings target last winter. Compared to average consumption from 2017 to 2022, 15 percent less gas was to be consumed. According to preliminary data from the federal government, however, it was now 23% less.
3997 gigawatt hours (GWh) of gas savings, regardless of the weather, was the target for the past winter half-year, i.e. from the beginning of October 2023 to the end of March. According to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) in its energy dashboard, 6,102 GWh have now been saved. The figures for March are only estimates.
January, which was 1.5 degrees warmer than the standard temperature, was the only one of the six autumn and winter months below the savings target in terms of consumption. However, in November 2023 - 0.6 degrees warmer than the norm - the target was achieved. The target was also achieved throughout the winter if the above-average winter temperatures are excluded.
According to the Energy Dashboard, the price of gas for end consumers fell over the course of the winter and was also lower than in the previous winter. And in November 2023, gas still cost significantly more for end consumers than in January.
In Switzerland, around three quarters of annual gas consumption is used for heating in the winter months. The voluntary savings target of 15 percent should therefore be achieved through voluntary measures in households, industry, services and administration.
The savings target was already clearly exceeded last winter. A total of 5819 gigawatt hours or around 22 percent less was consumed. Switzerland had joined the EU's gas savings target in solidarity in order to prevent bottlenecks in energy supply.
