The European film industry is making its grand entrance in Berlin this Saturday evening. This is when the 36th European Film Awards 2023 will be presented. Switzerland is competing with four nominations - and will be in the spotlight as host in 2024.

The Georgian actress Eka Chavleishvili is nominated in the best actress category for her leading role as Ethéro in the Swiss-Georgian co-production "Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry".

The film was screened at the Cannes Festival in the Quinzaine des Cinéastes section. Fifty-year-old Ethéro from a Georgian village falls in love unexpectedly and has to decide between a relationship or an independent life.

Looted goods from Tuscany

Briton Josh O'Connor has been nominated for Best Actor in Berlin. He plays the lead role as archaeologist Arthur in the Italian-Swiss co-production "La Chimera". The film is about grave looters in Tuscany in the 1980s who sell their looted goods via Switzerland. The film was nominated for a Palme d'Or in Cannes.

In the best short film category, the 16-minute "Flores del Orto Patrio" can hope to win an award. The Swiss-Colombian co-production revolves around a group of queer activists in the Colombian Caribbean.

Four competitors each

Swiss filmmaking is also a contender for an award with the film "Longing for the World/L'Amour du Monde". As one of three nominees, the film has high hopes in the European Young Audience Award category.

Promising candidates for the European Film Awards in the feature film category are "Anatomy of a Fall/Anatomie d'une chute" (France), "The Zone of Interest" (UK, Poland, USA) and "Fallen Leaves" (Finland, Germany).

37th award ceremony in Lucerne

The European Film Awards have been presented by the European Film Academy, based in Berlin, since 1988. The event takes place there every two years. In other years, it is the turn of other cities throughout Europe. Next year, the 37th European Film Awards will be presented for the first time in Switzerland, at the KKL in Lucerne.
