By rejecting the new rules on subletting, the tenants' association has cleared the way for "real and effective" solutions. The association has been denouncing this shortcoming for years, it announced on Sunday.
During the campaign, the advocates had assured that they wanted to put a stop to problematic, recurring and permanent subletting via booking platforms such as Airbnb. The Tenants' Association (MV) is now inviting all stakeholders to work constructively on solutions at communal, cantonal and federal level, which will hold all parties to account. The Swiss do not want any reduction in tenant protection.
The message to parliament is clear: "It is high time that it freed itself from its role as a recipient of orders from the real estate lobby." The pending rent increase proposals should be stopped at the earliest opportunity. Today's results are "a resounding slap in the face for the profit-driven real estate lobby", which is constantly expanding its influence on the housing market and making a profit at the expense of tenants, the MV continued.
