The Aargau cantonal constitution now contains a new climate article

The canton of Aargau is writing a climate article into its constitution. According to interim results, the electorate has approved a corresponding amendment to the constitution with around 55% of votes in favor. 190 out of 197 municipalities have been counted.
The new article states that the canton and the municipalities are committed to limiting climate change. They are strengthening their ability to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. In doing so, they take into account the objectives of the federal government and the international agreements that are binding for Switzerland.
Only the SVP was against it
The climate article sparked little debate in the run-up to the vote. Only the SVP was against it. The party with the most voters described the article as "superfluous".
All other parties supported the article adopted by Parliament. The supporters stated that a legal basis for climate protection and a binding obligation must be created.
The cantons of Basel-Stadt, Bern, Geneva, Glarus, Vaud and Zurich, among others, already have a climate article in their constitutions. The canton of Fribourg has its own climate law.
