The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced on Thursday that the Gotthard Base Tunnel will remain closed until the end of the day due to a derailment in the morning. All passenger trains between the German-speaking and Italian-speaking parts of Switzerland will be rerouted over the Gotthard mountain route, which will add around an hour to the journey time. Delays and cancellations are also possible. The cause of the derailment is being investigated by experts and the Swiss Safety Investigation Authority (SUST) has been called in.
