Water suppliers have dyed the Sitter river in Zihlschlacht-Sitterdorf, Switzerland, green with food dye in order to gain new insights into the drinking water supply and be better prepared in the event of water pollution. The test was delayed due to the weather and the fluorescent dye Uranin, based on water-soluble sodium salt, was used to colour the river at the Weiler Papiermühle. This will allow authorities to measure the flow rate and how quickly the water infiltrates the groundwater and reaches the various drinking water sources. Regular samples will be taken from the groundwater extraction plants in the hours and days after the dyeing, and the water will be analysed for traces of the dye. The Thurgau Office of Environment is also involved in the project and is particularly interested in the flow behaviour of the river. There is no risk to humans or the environment, and the drinking water quality will not be affected.
