Green Party President Balthasar Glättli has called for a seat in the Federal Council to be dedicated to climate action. He has declared that the old formula of political representation is no longer valid, as the Free Democrats have achieved the worst electoral result in their history in Switzerland.
On Saturday, Glättli said to the media at the Federal Palace that the Green Party had achieved the second best result in its history in the last Sunday's election, as a justification for the candidacy for the Federal Council after the electoral setback of the previous Sunday.
On Sunday, the sovereign elected with nearly 60 percent of the vote on June 18 gave the Parliament and the Federal Council the mandate to move forward with an ambitious climate policy. Therefore, it is necessary to align all laws on the path towards net zero emissions.
The Swiss Federal Assembly's nomination of the Green Party has presented the country with a choice between maintaining the status quo or building bridges towards a better future for all, between delaying climate protection or taking action for more climate justice. Parliament can further decide between treating gender equality as a side issue or as a solution for Switzerland and for a relationship with Europe that creates shared opportunities instead of isolation.
The Green Party announced on Saturday that they will be targeting a seat held by the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in the upcoming Federal Council elections in December, rather than any of the seats held by the Social Democratic Party (SP). The party had originally planned to inform the public of their decision on Friday evening, but postponed the announcement until Saturday.
