Covering the football pitches in Kloten ZH began on Tuesday. This is one of the most important measures in the fight against the Japanese beetle. The pest was discovered in the airport community last year.

After last year's measures against the pest failed to produce the desired results, the canton of Zurich announced further planned measures around a month ago. One of the most important measures will begin today, Tuesday, with the covering of the football pitches at Kloten's Stighag sports facility, as was announced at a media event in Kloten ZH.

Experts assume that larvae of the pest, which can pose a threat to numerous plant species, can be found in the soil of the football pitches in particular. The pitches will therefore be covered until the end of the flying season. This is to prevent any beetles from flying out.
