The Fribourg daily newspaper "Liberté" comments online on the election of Federal Councillor Beat Jans as follows:
As expected, the election of the Federal Councillor went smoothly: the parliamentarians diligently played their score to prevent a dissonant note from causing chaos in the dome. Beat Jans, a Social Democrat from Basel, emerged victorious from this game and became the 122nd Federal Councillor in the history of Switzerland. (...) With Beat Jans, the large Swiss cities are once again represented in the government, which is undoubtedly a good thing given their demographic weight. However, the man from Basel must remember that our country is not just made up of the "golden triangle" of Zurich, Basel and Bern.
