The Mitte party, led by President Gerhard Pfister, has expressed its ambition for a second seat in the Swiss Federal Council. Pfister argued that the logic of the FDP and SVP parties is that the three strongest parties should receive two seats in the Federal Council, regardless of the difference in votes between them and the fourth strongest party. Pfister did not directly express his party's ambition for a second seat, but noted that influence in Switzerland is often achieved through the Federal Council. He also stated that the Mitte party would not challenge any incumbent Federal Councillors, but that it would be interesting if an FDP Councillor were to resign. The Mitte party has now overtaken the FDP in the National Council, with 29 seats, making it the third strongest party after the SVP and SP.
