Pop chronicler Samuel Mumenthaler was born in Bern in 1961. The trained lawyer played in various bands and was a founding member of Züri West. Mumenthaler has also written various books on Swiss pop music.
"Hot! Jazz als frühe Popkultur" is his most recent work. Before jazz, the journalist and author devoted himself to the beat in 2001 ("Beat Pop Protest - Der Sound der Schweizer Sixties") and to the musician Polo Hofer in 2005 ("Polo - eine Oral History").
During his youth, Mumenthaler fell in love with pop. As he says himself, he is particularly interested in the local history of a global phenomenon. He has been writing about pop culture as a music journalist and author since the 1980s.
Today, Mumenthaler sits on the board of Swissjazzorama, a Swiss jazz archive. The passionate drummer owns around 10,000 records of Swiss music as well as a "sprawling" paper archive consisting of posters and photos.
