The number of daycare centers in Switzerland has risen significantly: from 3169 last year to 3845 this year. Only in the cantons of Schaffhausen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Uri was there no expansion.
This is the result of a survey conducted by the Institute of Political Science at the University of Bern among the cantonal contact persons for supplementary family and school childcare.
The main findings are summarized in a report published on Thursday for the attention of the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Social Affairs (SODK). The highest proportion of new daycare centers was created in the canton of Glarus. It is followed by Valais and Geneva. The cantons of Neuchâtel, Jura and Zurich bring up the rear.
The number of places in daycare centers has also increased in practically all cantons. While 53,180 approved daycare places were available throughout Switzerland (excluding Aargau, Zurich and Lucerne) in 2020, this figure had already risen to 62,199 places in the same cantons by 2024. Nationwide, there were even 92,513 places. The cantons of Nidwalden, Zug, Valais, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Graubünden recorded the strongest proportional growth, the report continued.
