A rescue helicopter rescued a hiker who had fallen from a precarious position on the Brienz Ridge in the canton of Bern late on Thursday evening. The man and his colleague had been surprised by the heavy thunderstorms on their ridge hike.
The injured hiker was found with the help of a thermal imaging camera, reported Swiss Air-Rescue (Rega) on Friday morning. The rescue with a second Rega helicopter was challenging due to the darkness, another thunderstorm cell and heavy precipitation.
The rescue had to be interrupted briefly. The patient was ultimately rescued using a rescue hoist. He was then flown out, given medical treatment and flown to a hospital.
The hiker had been on a ridge hike between Harder and the Brienzer Rothorn with a colleague. A strong thunderstorm at 7 p.m. took the two of them by surprise, as Rega further reported.
They lost sight of each other in the process. After an unsuccessful search for his colleague, one of the hikers continued on alone and sought help on an alp.
The Bern cantonal police then carried out initial investigations and called out Rega for the search. However, a search flight by the helicopter crew from Wilderswil in the area where the missing person was believed to be located was unsuccessful.
