According to an expert report, the third Rhone correction was based on flood protection that was too high. The Valais State Council therefore wants to redimension the project. At the same time, it should take account of the changed environment, in particular climate change.
Based on a new analysis, the Valais government considers the current expansion plan for the third Rhone correction to be "disproportionate". The State Council has therefore decided to revise the project.
The third Rhone correction, as it is defined today, "is a five-star project" that sets the safety barrier "very, very high", said Raphaël Mayoraz, head of the Valais Natural Hazards Office, to the media in Sion on Tuesday. The canton is now of the opinion that the project is "too ambitious". A working group has been tasked with reviewing the project and drawing up a timetable.
The third Rhone correction was the largest flood protection project in Switzerland to date. The total costs to date have been estimated at 3.6 billion Swiss francs.
