Several thousand people responded to a call from trade unions and left-wing parties on Wednesday evening and protested in Bellinzona against the wage cuts decided by the Ticino government. According to the organizers, around 6000 people took part.

The demonstration started at around 5 p.m. at the train station and led to the seat of government. There, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the austerity measures planned by the canton, as a correspondent from the Keystone-SDA news agency discovered at the scene.

The demonstration was organized by trade unions - including the VPOD - and supported by the Association for the Defence of Pensions and the Movement for Socialism. The aim of the demonstration was to denounce the wage cuts announced by the Ticino government as part of the 2024 budget, which has not yet been approved by parliament.

Salary cuts of around 2 percent are planned for cantonal employees. In addition, the cost-of-living adjustment is not to be adjusted in line with the cost of living.

The cost-cutting measures proposed by the canton affect all state employees, i.e. employees in schools, universities, hospitals, cantonal clinics, the health and social services and social education.
