Thousands of Kurds Demonstrate in Lausanne

Thousands of Kurds and their supporters demonstrated in Lausanne on Saturday afternoon to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne, which buried their dream of an autonomous state. The participants gathered at Ouchy at 1:30 pm, according to a reporter from Keystone-SDA on the spot. Later, speeches were to be held in front of the Palais de Rumine, where the Treaty of Lausanne was signed on July 24, 1923. The demonstrators waved numerous flags distributed by the organizers, with images of Kurdish organizations such as the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) or the portrait of its founder Abdullah Öcalan, who is imprisoned in Turkey. Posters read, among other things, "The Treaty of Lausanne is a decision for genocide against the Kurdish peoples". The police accompanied the demonstration with a large deployment.
