A violent thunderstorm hit Ticino early Friday morning. Unlike the last weekend in June, however, the damage was limited. The power went out in some places.

MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, reported wind speeds of more than 100 kilometers per hour in southern Ticino in an entry on X (formerly Twitter).

The area around Lugano and Mendrisiotto were particularly affected. Trees fell onto roads in several places due to strong gusts of wind, as a spokesperson for the Ticino cantonal police told the Keystone-SDA news agency. There were no serious incidents and, as far as is known at present, fortunately no one was injured.

Among other things, a tree blocked the emergency lane on the A2 between Coldrerio and Mendrisio, as the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) wrote on X.

According to police reports, the power went out in the village of Caneggio in the district of Mendrisio at six o'clock and the supply could not initially be restored. The village of Arzo, which belongs to the municipality of Riva San Vitale, was also without power for the time being. In Meride and Sagno, on the other hand, there were only temporary power cuts lasting around 15 minutes.

On Thursday, MeteoSwiss warned of renewed heavy thunderstorms in Ticino. The warning is valid until Sunday night.
