In Switzerland, there are currently 104 known renewable energy expansion projects, according to the Swiss Electricity Association (VSE). If all projects were realised, the VSE estimates that an annual production of 4 terawatt hours (TWh) would be achieved, with at least 3.4 TWh of additional winter electricity. However, at least 37 TWh are needed. The VSE list includes 34 hydropower projects, 39 planned alpine PV open-air installations, 28 wind power projects and 3 biomass projects. According to the VSE, there is no shortage of good projects to significantly advance the expansion of Swiss (winter) electricity production. However, practically every expansion project faces strong opposition and years of legal disputes. By 2050, Switzerland will need significantly more electricity, particularly from hydropower, solar and wind power plants, to close a gap of at least 37 TWh, more than half of which is needed in winter. The VSE study "Energy Future 2050" in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) has come to this conclusion. The list released on Wednesday should provide information on how many terawatt hours can be added in the best case, which projects are delayed or blocked by objections, and the reasons for this.
