The Sion Wine Cellars Association has suspended the winemaker and wine merchant convicted of AOC fraud. The man was sentenced to three and a half years in prison without parole by the Sion District Court a week ago.
Between 2009 and 2016, he had sold several hundred thousand liters of foreign, Schaffhausen or quota-free wine under the protected designation of origin AOC Valais.
Following the "harsh verdict of the judiciary", the Association of Wine Cellars of Sion has excluded the wine merchant "from any activities until the final judgment", Frédéric Dumoulin, president of the association, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday. He was confirming a report in the Valais newspaper "Le Nouvelliste". "Our association condemns the actions he is accused of", Dumoulin continued.
Following the announcement of the verdict by the Sion District Court on Monday last week, the accused winegrower stated that he would await the reasons for the verdict before deciding whether to appeal.
In addition to the prison sentence, the man in his fifties was ordered to repay a sum of 1.94 million francs in the form of a compensation claim in the amount of the estimated profit.
