Patience was required in both directions in front of the Gotthard Tunnel on the Saturday before the Ascent. In the southbound direction, traffic was backed up for 9 kilometers in the early afternoon.
This extended the journey time for travelers heading towards Ticino and Italy by around an hour and a half, as the Touring Club of Switzerland wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter). After 2 p.m., the length of the traffic jam began to decrease, at least for the time being.
In the opposite direction, the traffic jam in front of the south portal of the tunnel in Airolo grew to eight kilometers by shortly before 2:30 pm. The time lost was just under one and a half hours. .
For years, long traffic jams have regularly occurred on the Gotthard during the spring holidays. The A2 and A13 are particularly affected.
Last week, the Federal Roads Office (Astra) appealed to travelers to stay on the freeway and not leave it even when there is a traffic jam. Unwanted diversionary traffic puts a strain on people in the villages along the national roads and leads to gridlock in the affected regions. It also increases the risk of accidents.
