Track clear on the important north-south connection between Basel and Karlsruhe (D): After three weeks of closure between Rastatt and Baden-Baden, trains are now running again on the Rhine Valley line.
This was announced by Deutsche Bahn on Saturday. The extensive construction work was completed on time. Deutsche Bahn thanked all customers on long-distance and regional services for their patience during the construction work. Especially at the beginning of the closure, there were problems with replacement services. Passengers on regional services can still expect restrictions in September.
Important step for rail tunnel
The work involved converting around two kilometers of track between Rastatt and Baden-Baden so that the tracks coming out of the Rastatt tunnel can be connected to the Rhine Valley railroad. According to Deutsche Bahn, this is another important step on the way to commissioning the rail tunnel. This is planned for the end of 2026.
The 170-year-old line transports goods between the North Sea ports, important industrial regions in western Germany, Switzerland and northern Italy. The continuous four tracks are scheduled for completion in 2035, but the multi-billion euro expansion of the Rhine Valley Railway as a whole will not be completed until 2041.
