A transformer station failure at the Steghof substation caused a widespread power outage in parts of the city of Lucerne last Saturday. Around 11,500 households in the Steghof, Schönbühl and Hubelmatt areas were affected.

A short circuit in a medium-voltage cable in Fruttstrasse led to another short circuit in a neighboring cable, Energie Wasser Luzern (EWL) announced on Monday. This ultimately led to an overload on the transformer, which consequently switched itself off for safety reasons.

The transformer was switched back on with the help of the emergency power supply. According to EWL, the affected cable points were repaired between Saturday and Monday. In the coming months, the point will even be completely renewed.

The power outage occurred at around 00:30 on August 10 and lasted until shortly after 05:15. Almost 20 people from EWL were deployed to rectify the problem.
