The farmers' association sowed fear with false statements about the biodiversity initiative. Green parliamentary group leader Aline Trede (BE) said this on Sunday after her pro-committee lost the vote. She now takes the Federal Council at its word that the current measures are sufficient to protect biodiversity.
It is an undisputed scientific fact that biodiversity in Switzerland is in a bad way, said Trede in the Swiss television program SRF. Her side had not succeeded enough in explaining how important biodiversity is as a basis for life.
The energy sector, along with the farmers, had strongly opposed the initiative as they feared that the energy transition would jeopardize renewable energy projects. Trede explained that the Greens in particular were strongly committed to the Electricity Act. The energy transition must come, he said, and it is also feasible if species protection is taken into account.
Addressing the farmers' association, Trede said that it must face up to the scientifically proven fact of species extinction. Agriculture must take the needs of nature seriously and respect them.
