The trial of a 59-year-old Iranian man began at the criminal court in Muttenz on Wednesday morning. He is alleged to have stabbed an acquaintance in January 2023 while under the influence of drugs. The accused claimed to have acted in self-defense.

He had to defend himself because the acquaintance had attacked him with a knife, the defendant said at the start of the trial. He had been used by him and had had to endure him for years.

According to the public prosecutor's office in Basel, the accused visited the victim in his apartment in Sissach on the morning of January 31, 2023, where they had consumed cocaine, heroin and other drugs together. An argument ensued and the accused stabbed the 63-year-old compatriot several times.

According to an expert opinion, the 59-year-old defendant suffers from a severe, chronic schizophrenic disorder. It can therefore be assumed that he has lost his capacity for understanding and control, the report continues.
