Gustave Eiffel, the French engineer and father of the Eiffel Tower, spent his summers at his house in Vevey, Switzerland. On December 27th, one hundred years ago, Eiffel passed away. To commemorate this event, two exhibitions have been organised in Vevey. The first exhibition, at the Swiss Camera Museum, showcases forty photographs taken by Eiffel himself. He used the Autochromverfahren, the first industrial colour photography process, to capture images of the Geneva Lake, the Winzerfest of 1905, and his steam yacht. The second exhibition, at the Historical Museum Vevey, focuses on the Villa Claire, a small property owned by Eiffel which was demolished in 1978. The exhibition includes photographs, plans, archival documents, and models of the villa. The demolition of the villa raises questions about the concept of preserving architectural heritage.
