The communities in Valais and Ticino hit by the storms will receive two million francs in emergency aid from the Swiss Sponsorship for Mountain Communities. The latter is increasing its storm fund accordingly due to the extensive damage in financially weak regions.
The heavy rainfall over the weekend has led to major devastation, according to a press release issued on Monday by the Mountain Communities Association. Bridges were torn away by the masses of water, villages and roads were flooded and electricity and water supplies were interrupted.
In Ticino alone, several hundred people were evacuated at the weekend. Help was requested from the army there and in Valais. In Ticino, drinking water had to be brought in by helicopter.
