According to the United Nations (UN), many seriously injured children in the Gaza Strip are dying because there are hardly any ambulance transports to clinics outside the crisis region. "Those who barely survived the ruthless bombardments must die of their injuries afterwards," said James Elder, spokesman for the UN Children's Fund, Unicef, in Geneva.
The number of evacuated children has fallen dramatically to less than one child per day since the Rafah border crossing was closed in May, said Elder. Despite their dramatic situation, those affected are at the mercy of an indifferent bureaucracy, criticized the Unicef spokesperson.
WHO calls for medical corridors
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 12,000 and 14,000 patients of all ages from the Gaza Strip urgently need to be transferred to clinics outside the crisis region for treatment. In order to save civilian lives, it is high time to finally re-establish medical corridors, a WHO spokesperson demanded.
Since the terrorist attack on Israel in October 2023, the Israeli military has been bombing the coastal strip and also deploying ground troops against the Islamist Hamas. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, tens of thousands of people have been killed so far.
