The United Nations is now also considering supplying the Gaza Strip with food from the air. This was stated by Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN emergency aid office OCHA, in Geneva on Tuesday.
Only a limited amount can be transported on such missions. This is not the most efficient way to get food to the starving people. That is why the United Nations continues to insist that the supply by truck via land access be expanded.
However, not nearly enough trucks are being processed. The United Nations has been complaining for weeks that Israel is not granting enough trucks permits to enter the Gaza Strip. In the first three days of March, there were between 100 and 130 per day, said Laerke. Before the current conflict, more than 500 trucks with material were entering the Gaza Strip every day.
The United Nations is calling for more access to the Gaza Strip, including from the north, in order to reach the people there. Due to the severe destruction and the security situation, any journey from the south is complicated and dangerous.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported shocking conditions over the weekend following the first trips to the north of the Gaza Strip in weeks. Doctors told the WHO that ten children who were severely malnourished had died in a hospital there.
Both the USA and neighboring countries have already dropped food from the air over the Gaza Strip. US Vice President Kamala Harris also called on the Israeli government on Sunday to allow more aid into the Gaza Strip, to open more border crossings and not to impose "unnecessary restrictions on the delivery of aid".
