The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) expects one million refugees to return to Syria in the first half of 2025. This is the target figure, said Rema Jamous Imseis, UNHCR Director for the Middle East and North Africa, in Geneva.

People need support to find housing and work opportunities, she said.

Imseis warned against prematurely urging Syrian refugees from other countries to return home. "No one should be forced to return against their will," she said. "We are counting on governments to be patient and not make drastic decisions." It is still too early to determine where it is safe for returnees. In any case, refugees cannot be expected to pack a bag and leave overnight after years of exile.

There are still no new border controls in Syria following the fall of the Assad government, said Imseis. However, the UNHCR is at the border and sees thousands entering the country via Jordan or Turkey. But there are also thousands leaving the country. Exact figures are not available.
