The University of Bern has issued an ultimatum to the pro-Palestinian movement. The occupied premises in the Unitobler building must be vacated by 12 noon on Tuesday, it announced on Tuesday.
If this ultimatum is not complied with, the University of Bern reserves the right to have the occupation terminated, the university's media office told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request.
According to the activists, this ultimatum will also be announced by the university on site at midday. They have no plans to leave the site and are continuing to seek dialog with the university, a spokeswoman said.
The university management described the situation as unacceptable on Monday. It was obliged to guarantee the full continuation of studies and would not tolerate any intimidation of university members. Nor would it tolerate any restriction of academic freedom by activist circles.
Rector Christian Leumann met the protesters on site on Monday and answered their questions.
On Sunday evening, activists seized several rooms at the Unitobler site, including the canteen. They had called for an "academic boycott of Israeli institutions".
