The hunger crisis in Africa not only affects Sudan, but also neighboring Ethiopia. The United Nations wants to support 15.5 million people there this year, but there is a lack of money.
At a donor conference in Geneva on Tuesday, they campaigned for the financing of their needs plan. Of the 3.24 billion dollars (around three billion euros) required for this year, less than five percent has been collected so far, reported the UN emergency aid office OCHA.
The United Nations hoped that governments at the conference would raise a third of the sum needed for the most urgent aid over the next five months. On Monday, a donor conference in Paris raised two billion euros in aid for Sudan, which has been devastated by civil war for a year.
In addition to conflicts that repeatedly displace people, Ethiopia also suffers from droughts and floods. Around 4.5 million people are displaced in the country. According to the UN, many people in parts of the Afar, Ahmara and Tigray regions are severely malnourished. Fields, water supplies, clinics and schools have been destroyed by years of conflict.
The Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Taye Atske Selassie, said that overcoming the consequences of climate change was a global responsibility. The government is trying to boost food production through peace and development initiatives in order to protect the country from hunger crises.
