Just in time for the upcoming Easter travel season, the canton of Uri is introducing new measures to improve the congestion situation in front of the Gotthard north portal and reduce avoidance traffic. They will apply from March 20 and last until the Gotthard Pass road is opened - probably in May.

Specifically, the entrances in Göschenen and Wassern in the southbound direction will be closed from a traffic jam length of three kilometers, as announced by the Uri Construction Department on Thursday. This means that southbound travel from Amsteg will only be possible via the highway.

If this scenario occurs, the Göschenen entrance will be opened four times a day for 15 minutes each time for locals, workers and vacation guests: From 06.45 to 7 a.m., from 8.15 to 8.30 a.m., from 5.15 to 5.30 p.m. and from 6.45 to 7 p.m.

Dosing traffic

If traffic is backed up for eight kilometers, the speed on the freeway between Altdorf and Amsteg will be reduced to 80 km/h. The aim is to slow down traffic and reduce the risk of accidents. In addition, as in the past two years, the number of exits in Erstfeld and Amsteg will be reduced depending on the load on the cantonal road.

According to the press release, the canton is also examining further measures on the cantonal road network for the summer travel period.

Because congestion on the Gotthard was constantly increasing, the canton of Uri launched a congestion management project together with the Federal Roads Office in 2023. Since then, a working group has been developing short, medium and long-term solutions to reduce congestion and optimize traffic flow. Previously tried and tested measures have now been partially adapted.
