Individual sections of road were still closed in the Swiss Alps on Tuesday morning. However, the Poschiavo Valley is once again accessible from Switzerland.

Following the foehn storm and the heavy snowfall at the weekend, the Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) between Pontresina in the Engadine and Poschiavo in the Poschiavo Valley and Tirano IT in Graubünden will remain closed until the end of operations on Wednesday. This was announced by the Rhaetian Railway on Tuesday afternoon.

The tracks on the Bernina Pass route near Cadera have to be cleared of a landslide. There is also a risk of rockfall on the section of track from Poschiavo to Tirano near the border above Campascio.

Following geological investigations, the Rhaetian Railway has begun clearing and repairing the tracks near Cadera. And rock clearance work has begun on the rockfall-prone slope near Campascio.

The road over the Bernina Pass, which was also closed, was reopened later on Tuesday morning. This meant that the southern valley of Poschiavo was once again accessible from Switzerland. Rail replacement buses were also running between Poschiavo and Tirano IT.

Car transport open again

The bulletin from the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) described the avalanche danger in large parts of the Swiss Alps as "considerable" on Tuesday morning. At 1 pm, however, the cantonal police of Uri reopened the Furka road between Hospental and Realp to traffic.

At the same time, the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway resumed car transport through the Furka railroad tunnel between Realp UR and Oberwald VS.

According to the TCS, the Simplon Pass road between Gondo VS and Iselle in Italy was still closed on Tuesday afternoon.
