Franz Ruppen (SVP), President of the Cantonal Government of Valais, has defended the revision of the third Rhone correction announced by the State Council. There will not be a complete realignment, Ruppen said in an interview.
"We don't just throw everything into the bucket," said Ruppen in an interview with the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" on Saturday. A large part of the results from previous studies will be reused.
"There was never a decision to redimension the project, and certainly not to suspend it," said Ruppen. The Natural Hazards Service would examine the necessary adjustments over the next one and a half years.
Following an expert report at the end of May - which revealed that safety standards were too high - the State Council decided to revise the project. After the recent floods, the government was criticized for this. The floods had shown that the problem areas were still the same as in the 2000 floods, said Ruppen. "Now we have to move forward," said Ruppen.
