On Sunday, voters in the Thurgau municipality of Thundorf rejected a wind farm on their territory. They rejected the necessary partial zoning plan with a 63 percent "no" vote.

The planned wind farm has long been an issue in the village. The people of Thundorf finally rejected the wind energy project at the ballot box with 544 votes against and 320 in favor. The turnout for the municipal vote on the wind energy sub-zone plan was 75 percent.

"Without a partial zoning plan for wind energy, it is not possible to build wind turbines on Wellenberg," explained a spokesperson for the wind farm project in a statement on Sunday. The result of the vote was noted with great regret.

The electricity companies of the cantons of Zurich and Thurgau planned three wind turbines on the Wellenberg north of Thundorf. According to the project planners, these could have produced around 25-30 GWh of renewable energy per year for around 24,000 people.

Original project had to be redimensioned

The project met with resistance from the local population at an early planning stage. At an extraordinary municipal meeting, the majority of voters in Thundorf 2023 finally decided that no inhabited buildings should be located within 850 meters of wind turbines.

In order to comply with this requirement, those responsible redimensioned the project from the original eight to three wind turbines. There is also resistance to this. 104 people raised a joint objection during the public consultation of the relevant planning documents.
