Despite the ever-increasing importance of Black Friday, there are still retailers who are not offering any discounts on the day this year. Zurich department store Jelmoli, for example, is once again taking part in "Giving Tuesday" instead.
It wants to promote conscious consumption and donate money to charity, as CEO Nina Müller said in a press release. Instead of offering large discounts and bargains, Jelmoli is donating 5 francs to the Insieme 21 charity for every purchase of 50 francs or more in all stationary stores, thus setting an example against overconsumption.
Book retailer Orell Füssli is running a similar campaign, namely "Fair Friday". This was launched by Caritas. Customers at Orell Füssli can decide whether they want to donate 20 percent of the invoice amount to Caritas or receive a 20 percent discount on their purchase on this day, the bookseller announced.
Some other manufacturers and stores are also boycotting the bargain day. Zurich-based bag manufacturer Freitag, for example, is taking a stand for "conscious consumption". This consists not only of resource-conserving and durable products, but also of recyclable services. On Friday afternoon, all of the manufacturer's stores will therefore become temporary lending stations where you can borrow a bag.
And finally, sports retailer Decathlon and supermarket chain Denner, for example, are foregoing Black Friday promotions. Both announced on request that they already offer customers very good value for money throughout the year.
