The World Health Organization (WHO) wants to set up field hospitals in the Gaza Strip following the severe destruction caused by Israeli attacks.
This was said by the WHO representative for the occupied Palestinian territories, Richard Peeperkorn, on Friday. He spoke to reporters in Geneva from Jerusalem via video link.
Before the start of the Gaza war, there were around 3,500 hospital beds there. Today, there are only 1400 available in the sealed-off coastal area. However, due to the many injuries, there is a need for 5000.
In addition, 50 to 60 seriously ill patients per day need to be brought out of the Gaza Strip as soon as possible in order to receive adequate care in Egypt. Care in doctors' surgeries is also severely impaired, with a maximum of 60 percent still in use. Peeperkorn left open whether Israel had given any indication that it would agree to the evacuation and the establishment of field hospitals.
