Wiler auction house auctions off a five-franc coin for 30,000 francs

On Friday, the Rapp auction house in Wil SG auctioned off a Swiss five-franc coin from 1928 for 30,000 francs. The silver coin is larger than today's five-franc coin and was withdrawn from circulation in 1931. It is estimated that between 200 and 300 examples still exist.
Marianne Rapp Ohmann, owner of the Rapp auction house in Wil SG, explained the "surprise price" with the perfect quality of the coin. A private individual from Switzerland made the highest bid for it, she told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Production of these rather unwieldy Swiss five-franc coins was discontinued in 1928. Production of the five-franc coin in the size we know today began in 1931, according to the auction house.
According to Rapp Ohmann, it has happened that an older five-franc piece has been lying unrecognized in a great-grandparents' casket for several decades. For it to fetch 6000 times its original value, however, it must be in excellent condition - as in the current case.
