The City of Bern's snow clearing crews have been working non-stop since Thursday afternoon. In the meantime, the main roads are open again. It is likely to be late morning in the neighborhoods before the roads are cleared there too.
A good 100 people and around 50 vehicles are currently on duty, the City of Bern's Department of Civil Engineering, Transport and Urban Greenery announced early on Friday morning.
Since midnight, the teams have mainly been busy clearing the main traffic and public transport routes. This is being done in close consultation with the Bernmobil transport company. These routes are now passable again.
The transport company Bernmobil announced that they are trying to resume bus services on the first routes.
Snow has also been cleared in the neighborhoods since 4.30 am. However, due to the extensive road network, the work is likely to continue until late morning, the press release adds.
Heavy snowfall began in Switzerland on Thursday afternoon. The city of Bern's snow clearing services were working non-stop, writes the city. However, the teams had to contend with problems, especially during the evening rush hour.
"The heavy snowfall during rush hour and the layer of ice that immediately formed meant that not only Bernmobil buses but also numerous passenger cars came to a standstill - and in turn obstructed the clearing vehicles.
