On Friday night, a wolf killed a sheep in Urnäsch. The livestock was secured by herd protection measures, the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden wrote in a press release.
In Appenzell Ausserrhoden, several farm animals, some of them unprotected, have been killed in recent months. The canton assumes that there is a single wolf in the region. There are no indications of a pair or pack formation.
As a result of the livestock kills in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the conditions for shooting the wolf have not yet been met, the canton added. "Wolves must cause several cases of damage to livestock in protected herds before a cull can be considered." This is stipulated by federal hunting legislation. So far this year in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, two livestock kills have taken place in protected herds.
The game warden had taken a DNA sample from the sheep in Urnäsch. The analysis is still pending.
