The cantonal road through the partially collapsed tunnel near Riddes in the canton of Valais is expected to be open to traffic again at the end of June. Work to repair the tunnel is scheduled to begin at the end of the month.
The renovation work will be carried out in two phases, as representatives of the canton announced at a media conference in Riddes on Monday. In the first phase, the remaining cavities in the area of the rockfall will be filled in to stabilize this part. In a second phase, the slipped part of the tunnel will be restored by digging through the stabilized zone.
Built in 1963, the tunnel is the first on the route between Riddes and La Tzoumaz. On the evening of February 3, a piece of the rock face came loose. Around 100 cubic meters of rock collapsed. No people were injured.
