Zurich Airport handled significantly more passengers in May 2024 than in the same month last year. With a total of 2.77 million passengers, it also exceeded the pre-crisis level of 2019 for the first time on a monthly basis.

Compared to May 2023, the number of passengers rose by 9%, as the airport announced on Wednesday evening. Compared to the pre-pandemic level (May 2019), this corresponds to an increase of 2 percent. The fact that the Whitsun and Corpus Christi public holidays fell in the month of May this year had a supporting effect.

The airport experienced a new peak day this year on May 17. For the first time this year, more than 100,000 passengers traveled through the airport.

More flights

More aircraft also landed or took off in Zurich in May than in the same month last year. The number of aircraft movements rose by 7.5 percent to 23,762, but only reached 97.2 percent of the number of aircraft movements in May 2019.

On average, 132.5 passengers were seated on an aircraft. This is 0.3% less than in May 2023. The seat occupancy rate fell accordingly by 0.9 percentage points to 79.1%.

Commercial sales on the rise

Commercial sales increased by 3.5% to CHF 55.4 million in the month under review. The stores and restaurants on the "airside" (after the security check) benefited in particular from passengers' desire to buy, with an increase of 6.1%. In contrast, the stores on the "landside" had to make do with an increase of 0.3 percent.

The airport also handled 37,382 tons of freight in May. This represents an increase of almost 23% compared to the same month last year. However, compared to May 2019, i.e. before coronavirus, almost 2% less freight was transported.
