For the first time, the same number of passengers flew through Zurich Airport in October as before the coronavirus pandemic. Compared to the same month last year, the number of passengers increased significantly.
A total of 2.87 million passengers traveled through Zurich Airport in October. This is 19 percent more than in the same period last year. For the first time, traffic volumes have thus returned to pre-corona crisis levels.
The exact number of passengers was 99.9% of the October 2019 figure, as the airport announced on Monday evening. With 110,148 passengers on October 8, a new daily record was also set since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
The number of passengers traveling within Europe even rose slightly above the pre-crisis level. In contrast, the number of intercontinental passengers was only around 93% of the 2019 figure.
Among the passengers, 73% were local passengers. Zurich Airport was used by 27% of passengers for connecting flights.
11 percent more flights
There was also a significant increase in take-offs and landings compared to the same month last year. 23,400 aircraft movements represent an increase of 11 percent. This figure is only around 3 percent below the pre-crisis level.
As Zurich Airport had already explained to AWP at the beginning of November, the upturn in air traffic in October is primarily due to the fall holiday season. This is traditionally one of the busiest periods in the aviation year.
According to the press release, 139 passengers traveled on each flight, 3% more than in the same month last year. However, the load factor of 82% remained unchanged compared to the previous month of September.
Commercial sales increased
Passengers also spent more money at the airport than in the same month last year. The so-called commercial turnover rose by around 11 percent year-on-year to 55.5 million francs. This was higher than the turnover achieved by the airport in October 2019. Commercial revenue was already slightly above the pre-crisis level in the previous months.
At just under 18 percent, the increase was significantly stronger on the airside, i.e. behind the security checkpoint, than on the landside (+3 percent), which also includes the revenue from the new shopping center "The Circle".
