The conservative camp is facing a serious defeat in the canton of Zurich: GLP National Councillor Tiana Angelina Moser, who is also supported by the left, could win the second round of voting against SVP National Councillor Gregor Rutz and thus take the previously conservative seat in the Zurich Council of States.
On October 22, Rutz achieved by far the best result in the first round of voting in the canton of Zurich behind Daniel Jositsch (SP), who had already been elected as a member of the Council of States. However, the 51-year-old now only has the support of the SVP, FDP and some small parties as well as several associations in the second round of voting.
The SVP and FDP emphasize that it is important to keep the second seat in the Council of States in Zurich, which was previously held by Ruedi Noser (FDP), who is no longer standing. The FDP party executive also withdrew National Councillor Regine Sauter from the race in order to join forces.
An open race
The canton of Zurich is largely dominated by the middle classes, and Moser represents a party that stands between the two blocs and only has a voter share of around 12.4 percent.
However, her chances of being elected are still high. The center has decided to vote against her. And the 44-year-old is now supported by the EPP right through to the left-wing camp. The SP, for example, justified its support as a way of preventing "the right-wing hardliner Rutz".
This means that on November 19 it will be a bloc election between the left and the right. The outcome is open and depends on which camp can mobilize better in the second round of voting.
