Switzerland sees a 1.6% rise in AHV retirement pensions, with income exceeding expenditures in 2023.
At the end of 2023, around 2.5 million people in Switzerland were drawing an AHV retirement pension. This was 1.6% or 41,000 people more than a year earlier. Last year, the AHV took in more than it spent on pension payments.
Income amounted to CHF 51.2 billion and expenditure to CHF 50 billion, as announced by the Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO) on Tuesday. The contribution result of CHF 1.2 billion was almost 25% lower than in 2022. Including investments, the AHV generated a profit of CHF 2.9 billion.
A total of 2.81 million people received an AHV pension. Of these, over 91%, or around 2.5 million, received an old-age pension. Around a third—namely 968,000—of all pensions went to people living abroad. 15% of recipients abroad had a Swiss passport.
At the end of 2023, the average old-age pension was CHF 1919 per month. However, the pension varied depending on nationality.
