Following the tragic death of Alexei Navalny, Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs calls for a thorough investigation but refrains from summoning the Russian ambassador.
Following the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Bern has not summoned the Russian ambassador.
Switzerland is, therefore, refraining from taking measures such as those taken by Germany, the UK, and the Baltic states. Is this cowardess or neutrality? In the past, we have raised questions about Switzerland’s lack of neutrality. Especially as it pertains to Russian sanctions.
There are no plans to summon the Russian ambassador to Switzerland, a spokesperson for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
Switzerland demands that the circumstances of Alexei Navalny’s death be fully clarified. It is, therefore, calling for a corresponding investigation.

The politically motivated proceedings against Navalny and numerous other critics of the Russian government and the inhumane prison conditions showed how brutally the Russian judiciary acts against dissidents and how President Vladimir Putin suppresses freedom of opinion in Russia, said a spokeswoman for the Federal Foreign Office.
For their part, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania summoned the chargés d’affaires of the Russian embassies in their countries. It was made clear that the Kremlin was responsible for Navalny’s death.
