(KEYSTONE) A Zurich auction house auctioned the skeleton of the Tyrannosaurus Rex “Trinity” for more than 4.8 million francs on Tuesday. The skeleton is around 67 million years old.
The highest bid at the auction at the Zurich auction house Koller on Tuesday was made by an unknown bidder over the phone. According to the auction house, the expected sale price was between 5 and 8 million francs.
It was only the third auction of a complete T-Rex skeleton in the world and the first to take place in Europe.
The name “Trinity” is no coincidence. The skeleton was assembled from three specimens excavated from 2008 to 2013 in the Hell Creek and Lance Creek formations in the US states of Montana and Wyoming. A little more than 50% of the bones are original, which corresponds to a good value according to the auction catalogue.
