Three people were injured in an accident in the Gotthard road tunnel on Wednesday morning. The tunnel had to be closed for three hours.
Shortly before 09:00, a car with Zurich license plates had drifted into the oncoming lane, according to the Uri cantonal police. The driver was heading south. His car collided with an oncoming vehicle with Italian license plates. The driver of the latter was seriously injured as a result, while his passenger suffered minor injuries.
The two men and the driver, who was also slightly injured, were taken to different hospitals. The police estimate the damage to property at around 70,000 Swiss francs. The tunnel had to be closed in both directions for about two hours for the rescue and clean-up work. The exact course of the accident is being clarified.
