The Wallis region of Switzerland has opened a new 2.5 kilometer stretch of the A9 motorway on Friday. The stretch, between the Gampel-Steg Ost and Raron junctions, cost 22 million Swiss francs to build, including the necessary safety and operational equipment. The opening of the Raron-Visp West stretch is planned for 2025/26. During the construction of the new stretch, the project team faced various challenges, including the disposal of mercury-contaminated soil and the discovery of an insufficiently wide road embankment in one section. The construction of the A9 motorway has been in the headlines in the past, most recently in February when the Federal Court ruled that the affected construction companies must bear the additional costs incurred in the construction of the 4.25 kilometer Eyholz Tunnel due to geological difficulties.nnnnnnnnnn
